Harvest Notes August 5, 2010
Written by Dana Blizzard
This week for you to enjoy:Mokum Carrots - this deep orange variety is not farmed commercially because these roots are so crisp and tender that the machine harvesters cannot get them out of the ground with out snapping them - and that's also why I love growing them! Sometimes they even break when we pull them out by hand, but they are worth it because they have better flavor than their hardier commercial cousins.
- Red Ace Beets - vary popular for their root bulb, but don't forget to eat the tops! Sauté them in your stir-fry or chop them and eat them raw in your salad. I heard they are even delicious as beet top chips (bake them with your kale chips!)
- Swiss Chard - we grow the 'rainbow chard' so you'll get anywhere from pedal white to salmon and orange colored. I love to sauté mine and then pack it in an omelette or scramble it with eggs; it naturally has plenty of sodium so I don't have to add any salt to the eggs and they are fabulous!
- Kale! - what else to say besides the fact that it's really good for you and we have lots of it! What a good combination! But of course we have more to say about Kale; "it is low in Saturated Fat, and very low in Cholesterol. It is also a good source of Protein, Vitamin E (Alpha Tocopherol), Thiamin, Riboflavin, Folate, Iron and Magnesium, and a very good source of Dietary Fiber, Vitamin A, Vitamin C, Vitamin K, Vitamin B6, Calcium, Potassium, Copper and Manganese" (www.nutritiondata.self.com) - WOW!
- Berkeley Blueberries - also very good for you and I'm sure you've all found ways for them to go sown the hatch
- Zucchini Squash - full shares get the yellow patty pan and half shares get the dark green zucchini. Grill it, bake it, sauté it, slice it raw on your salad.
Until next week,
Dana
